This book is absolutely wonderful. It is intelligently written with love, humor and empathy. If you know someone who has, or is recovering from an eating disorder you will gain a lot of insight about the things client and therapist might experience while working together. It shows the wide spectrum of difficulties clients and therapists face, while connecting with each other, and exploring the things that are needed to improve and recover. It also shows how great therapists, safe relationships, love, and empathy can lead to hope, trust and healing.
For anyone who doesn’t know a lot about the subject, this is a good place to start.
A true reflection of living with eating disorders. I haven't personally had an eating disorder -- but knowing friends who have, Hornstein's stories and experiences helped me to understand the truth of what it's like to live with and recover from an eating disorder. This was an excellent read, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic glimpse into the world of eating disorders.
In this delightful and informative read, Hornstein takes us on two journeys that many of us are not privy to -- that of an Eating Disordered Client and the Therapists who are passionate to help them. From her days growing up with a dieting mother and an anorexic baby-sitter who died from the disease, Hornstein writes from the heart and in ways that only an insider who has travelled down both paths can. The book is filled with both recovery vignettes that we all can learn from, and wisdom and tools that therapists can use with clients and that clients can use themselves. As Hornstein says, "The goal is to know that we are beautiful and loveable for what and who we are, inside and out." Welcome words for us all!
As a therapist, who specializes in working with individuals with eating disorders, this book is by far the most honest depiction into that world that I have encountered. Hornstein, accurately captures the emotional highs and lows that are experienced by the person with the disorder, and the challenges that their treatment team faces during the recovery process. Confessions of an Eating Disorder Therapist is an incredible and well written journey, that speaks to the strength and courage of individuals who have struggled with eating disorders.
Lovely, inspiring, informative read. Hornstein weaves the clinical insights of a seasoned therapist through each intensely personal narrative. An intimate and compassionate exploration of the many facets of healing- from understanding the components of a strong therapeutic team to knowing how to find what restores and revives your spirit. Sure, this is a book about eating disorders but it is also a book about being an authentic, connected, imperfect clinician- it has given me so much to think about for my clients lives- as well as my own.
